Public Event

Please join us for an in-depth Defence and Security conversation as we unpack developments following the AUKUS announcement, AUSMIN ministerial consultations and first in-person Quad Leaders’ Summit.

The UWA Defence and Security Institute warmly welcomes your attendance at our end of year public panel discussion and networking reception. This event will explore timely developments in AUKUS, AUSMIN and the Quad and what they will mean for Australia and Defence in WA.

The strengthening of Australian involvement in emerging minilateral regional security and diplomatic architectures is a core component in the national interest. Against the backdrop of a rapidly evolving security landscape in the Indo-Pacific, this enhanced engagement highlights the ongoing importance of a shared approach to regional peace, stability, security and prosperity.

These developments will generate new risks but also enormous opportunities for governments at all levels, industry and business to contribute to an effective defence and security ecosystem.

Drawing on UWA’s distinct geographical advantage as Australia’s window to the Indian Ocean, this event seeks to leverage local perspectives and expertise in areas such as defence industry, defence capability development and maritime security, and Australia’s international and defence relations.

Former Defence Minister Stephen Smith will provide opening remarks and invite our expert panellists to the stage for a moderated discussion on the AUKUS nuclear submarine deal and technology sharing arrangement, AUSMIN ministerial consultations and first ever in-person Quad Leaders’ Summit.
