Roundtable discussion with H.E. Egils Levits

Date: November 10, 2023
Time: 9:00 am - 10:30 am
Location: UWA Senate Room, Winthrop Hall
Private Event | Public Event

The UWA Defence and Security Institute invite you to a private roundtable discussion with His Excellency Former President of the Republic of Latvia, Dr Egils Levits (2019 – 2023).

Since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces in February 2022, Latvia has consistently supported the reclamation of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. The close proximity to Ukraine has made Latvians feel personally invested in the conflict, supporting Kiev in whatever way possible. Furthermore, with the past 18 months seeing not only war and Russian occupation in its neighbourhood but the associated undermining of the European post-Cold War order, Latvia is quickly reorganising its own defences, including its parliament recently reintroducing compulsory military service. Dr Eglis Levits will provide perspective on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, detail Latvia’s material support for Kiev, and also explore the impact of the war on the Latvian state and society.

Date: Friday 10 November 2023

Time: 9:00am – 10:30am – Please arrive by 8:45am

Location: UWA Senate Room, Winthrop Hall

His Excellency Margers Krams, Latvian Ambassador to Australia, will also be joining us for this discussion.

Light refreshments will be provided.

We look forward to welcoming you to what will be a very timely and in-depth Chatham House Rule discussion.
